ARS HISTORY

  The Armenian Relief Society was established in 1910 in New York City by Edgar Agnounito provide educational and humanitarian assistance to Armenians throughout the world. Today, the ARS, Inc. has regions and chapters-at-large all over the world. The ARS of Eastern United States is one of its many regions.

The projects of the ARS Eastern United States include building, operating, and subsidizing Armenian schools and day care centers, sponsoring orphans in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabagh, operating Armenian one-day schools, providing university and college scholarships, funding the development of Armenian educational curricula and resource materials, operating an intensive three-credit Armenian summer studies program at the University of Connecticut, and funding and supporting Armenian youth camps.

The ARS also provides assistance to various Armenian and non-Armenian humanitarian relief and development programs by collaborating with international organizations such as USAID, the World Health Organization, the World Council of Churches, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and various Red Cross organizations. The ARS is officially recognized by the United Nations as a non-governmental organization (NGO) with the UN Economic and Social Committee.
